THAN-TAWAN

Rescued on 14 December 2023

Meet Than-Tawan, a brave 70-year-old elephant with a story of strength and resilience. Originally from the Surin province, she faced challenges after being sold to one of Phuket’s largest riding camps in 2015. However, on December 14, 2023, we rescued her, offering a new beginning at Phuket Elephant Sanctuary.

Currently receiving veterinary care, Than-Tawan has several health issues we are addressing.

Her back left leg has broken nails, common among elephants in riding camps due to walking on hard surfaces and a lack proper care. Our sanctuary’s natural environment and daily care by her new mahout and our assistant veterinarian Toomtam aims to help resolve these problems.

Than-Tawan also has two painful abscesses on her left cheek and back left leg, likely from injuries or poor living conditions. Our veterinary team is working diligently to aid her recovery.

A visible scar on her forehead serves as a reminder of past mistreatment involving hooks. At Phuket Elephant Sanctuary, we are dedicated to providing Than-Tawan with the love and care she deserves after 7 decades working hard in Thailand’s logging and tourism industries.

We are beyond grateful to our compassionate visitors, as your support enables us to offer elephants like Than-Tawan a chance at a healthier and happier future.
